New Product: Woodgrain HDPE

Redwood Plastics is happy to announce a new product offering* under our HDPE line: Redco Woodgrain HDPE. This attractive product is durable, UV-stable, tough, and easy to work with saws, drills, lathes, and other tools that would regularly be used for wood products. This product is optimized for outdoor use and will never require repainting. Highly weather-resistant, with fade resistant colorant (impregnated throughout the entire sheet), this product can take the impact of everyday life and will outlast wood.

Redco Woodgrain is currently available in a single sheet size and a single thickness: 4′ x 8′ x 3/4″ thick. Available colors are espresso brown, tan, and black. Custom thicknesses are available but only with a 5,000 lbs or greater minimum order. The attractive faux wood surface makes the product excellent for applications such as outdoor kitchens, tables, marine furniture, playground equipment, decking, or anything else you feel would be suited to a strong, weather-resistant, attractive replacement to wood.

This is a premium product and it will not be competitive on price alone when compared to the cost of wood. However, for the individual or organization that is looking for a product with a low life-cycle cost requiring very little maintenance, repainting, cleaning, or other labor, and wants a premium product then Redco Woodgrain HDPE offers an excellent solution.

To inquire about pricing or if you have questions on this product please contact us.

*Please note the product is not currently stocked at our locations and will need to be brought in as required for orders. Typical lead time to land the product is 2 weeks. The minimum order is a single full sheet, it is not sold in smaller sizes or partials.

Application Spotlight: Redco HDPE “Play” As Outdoor Tabletops

Recently Terrapin Brewing Co (www.terrapinbeer.com) approached us with an interesting application. They wanted to create a plastic table surface for use at their brewery but this offered some unique challenges. For one, the tables were outside which meant that a UV-stable plastic was in order. Secondly, a variety of properties were important: wear, impact, anti-slip and non-fading color would be desirable. But most importantly the color had to be green and a green that was fairly close to the branding of Terrapin Brewing Co. This is difficult in the world of industrial plastics where custom colors can mean extra costs, long lead times, and minimum order sizes. In addition, an industrial plastic such as UHMW would be overkill for this application and would even have some undesirable characteristics, such as being very slick.

But our representative working on the application made an intuitive leap. We had access to a specialized HDPE material Redco “Play” board designed for playgrounds. In our world of sawmills, mines, and heavy construction this isn’t something we focus on! Nevertheless, Redco Play satisfied all the requirements of the application: it was green, UV-stable, impact-resistant, wear-resistant and had an “orange peel” textured surface so glasses wouldn’t slide around. They were supplied pre-cut into 24″ x 24″ x 1/2″ (thick) squares with a minimum order of 16. Terrapin quickly installed these and you can see a picture they sent us below. They have said they are very satisfied with the material and this application.

Specifying Outrigger Pads

When customers consider a switch to plastic outrigger pads they sometimes don’t know where to start in how to get their quotation. Often we’ll be told that the customer has a certain piece of equipment and to spec a pad size and thickness for them but this over-complicates things a little. Regarding the size of the pad the simplest way is to just get the plastic pads with the same dimensions as the stock pads that came with your rig. If you don’t have your stock pads we can help you out but we do need to know the area of your outrigger feet (length x width and are the feet square or round?).

Thickness is a little trickier to specify. UHMW plastic, commonly used for outrigger pads, is virtually unbreakable but having a pad that is too small and thin may lead it to bend around the outrigger foot as it is more flexible than wood and this may destabilize the rig. A general rule of thumb for most vehicles in the 20-50 ton range is to go with 1.5″ thick pads. 2″ thick is usually good for 50-70 ton but using 2″ pads for lighter equipment will result in less flex with the pad and a more stable lift. Above 70 ton 3″ thick pads are strongly recommended. To reiterate: the plastic will most likely not break on a thinner pad; however, the amount of flex may be undesirable. This is partially dependent on where the pads are being used – we have certain customers who only ever lift on concrete surfaces and thus can use a thinner pad because it has more support. Customers who lift on soggy soils may need thicker pads. As always, we refer to OSHA in that lifts should only ever be done on stable, level, ground.

Product Spotlight: Redco VHMW

While we’ve been able to supply VHMW for a few months now, only recently have we updated our website with a separate Redco VHMW section that can be found by clicking here. VHMW holds a new “middle ground” in the polyethylene family between HDPE and UHMWPE. Redco VHMW, which stands for “very high molecular weight”, can be substituted in applications where UHMW is considered to be “overkill”. The price on VHMW will be less than equivalent UHMW; however, only if you require several sheets of material. We do not currently stock VHMW and therefore freight costs, minimum orders, and small order fees may apply.

Compared to UHMW, VHMW has similar wear properties at a less expensive cost. It also has a better surface finish and is smoother than the typically skived UHMW sheet. Like UHMW, Redco VHMW performs very well in cold applications and is quite durable. It is also FDA and USDA approved for applications with food contact. Typical manufacturing tolerances on UHMW permit a (+-) 10% variance on sheet thickness; however, VHMW is manufactured with a variance of only 5%. The standard sheet size is 4′ x 8′ in 1/8″-1″ thick but custom sheet sizes are available on request.

Tuffkast: The Problem Solver

Plastics solve problems and they can overcome issues that plague traditional materials such as metals and wood. But for the most part a plastic still has some weak spots that under certain situations can create a trade-off in properties: the optimal material but not perfect. Redco Tuffkast; however, is our material with the fewest weak points and therefore can solve problems that other plastics simply cannot.

Tuffkast is most commonly a replacement for nylon in areas where nylon suffers deficiencies: water absorption, impact, and low-temperature performance. In each case Tuffkast’s properties are superior to nylon: it absorbs much less water, is an excellent impact and low-temperature material. This means in applications where nylon is commonly used Tuffkast can be substituted, applications such as bearings and sheaves. To reduce the coefficient of friction, Tuffkast is available in both oil-filled and dry lubricant grades. Tuffkast has excellent wear abilities and impact resistance that is over double that of nylon.

Any drawbacks to Tuffkast are minimal. It does have a higher cost than many plastics of the engineering-grade tier but this is offset by its excellent performance. The higher coefficient of friction than materials it replaces (such as UHMW) needs to be considered but again, this can usually be offset by getting one of the lubricant filled grades. In general, Tuffkast is an extraordinarily versatile engineering plastic that is able to solve many problems other plastics simply cannot. Redco Outrigger Pads: Accept No Substitutes

As spring continues we move into the busiest time of the construction season. Along with other equipment purchases for concrete pumping trucks, mobile cranes, bucket lifts, or even RVs, Redco Outrigger pads need to be considered as an essential piece of safety equipment. The engineered polyethylene material we use is extremely strong and holds up much better to the ASTM D256 impact test than metal, wood, or any other solid plastic. All plastics are not created equal! Outrigger pads are sometimes sold using HDPE which is a lower grade of polyethylene. Our plastic is much stronger than HDPE, can take more load, more PSI, and will last longer in the field.

But how do the other main substitute materials for Redco outrigger pads stand up?:

Wood:

Wood is one of the most common outrigger pad materials. It is cheap and you can jury-rig wooden cribbing out of almost anything. Wood; however, is a very poor outrigger pad material. Wood is organic: it will rot, get moldy, soak up water, and decay. In fact, wood is considered so dangerous as an outrigger pad material that it’s outlawed in some European countries for use as outrigger pads. Redco outrigger pads will not have any of those drawbacks. In fact, the only “advantage” wood has over Redco outrigger pads is price, but what price do you put on preserving your equipment and safeguarding your crews?

Metal:

Metal is not user friendly, it’s very heavy and good luck getting it out once stuck in the mud! Metal will also rust and corrode. A Redco outrigger pad is 1/7th the weight of equivalent steel and doesn’t stick in soft soils. It will last longer, and perform better, than a metal outrigger pad.

Product Spotlight: Redco Saw Blade Carriers

The Redco saw blade carrier is a critical safety product for sawmills. They were developed in response to a need to move large saw blades across the sawmill. Carrying a blade by hand – blades that can surpass 26″ in diameter” – is a disaster waiting to happen, and sadly, we know of several instances of injury caused by improper handling of saw blades. Beyond harm to employees, those injuries can lead to costly lawsuits or Worker’s Compensation Board penalties. So why risk it when a solution is available?

The Redco Saw Blade Carrier is a molded polyurethane product manufactured from several types of durable Redco polyurethane.  The carrier is available for both single blades and in a “double/triple” blade variety. Both models are very similar so the double/triple does not cost extra. Also, because the product comes out of a mold these carriers are always manufactured at the largest size (26″ in diameter). We then cut the portion that holds the blade to size for a given saw diameter. That means that a 26″ diameter saw blade carrier costs the same as a 16″ diameter carrier. For more information or a quote on the Redco Saw Blade Carrier please contact us today.
